Hydraulic fluid is the most vital component of a hydraulic system, The principal requirements of a premium hydraulic fluid are proper viscosity, high viscosity index, anti-wear protection (if needed), good oxidation stability, adequate pour point, rust inhibition, resistance to foaming, and compatibility with seal materials. Study says that 75% of Hydraulic Systems Failures are due to contaminants in hydraulic fluid.

Sludge & Varnish- formed due to oxidation process it can occur in even the well-maintained machines. Surprisingly, it can also arise when oils are not particularly old or contaminated; oxidation causes degradation of the oil over time. Elevated temperatures accelerate the oxidation process – the general rule of thumb is that for every 10°C increase in operating temperature, doubles the rate of oxidation.
Water– Formed either through the combustion or condensation process, large quantities of free water in a hydraulic fluid can be removed by draining the sump periodically. However, small amounts of water can become entrained.
Wear and Tear- Wear is the unavoidable result of metal-to-metal contact, which can lead to sudden breakdown of hydraulic systems.
